Concerns jobs at children's hospital satellite centre will not be filled in time for July opening

10 out of 13 consultant positions have been filled at the new national children's hospital satellite centre in Blanchardstown Dublin.

Children's Health Ireland (CHI) says that the outpatients and urgent care centre based at Connolly will open in July, following concerns that jobs would not be filled on time.

It has been confirmed that there are challenges in certain specialities such as radiology, but recruitment is ongoing.

CHI also says the hiring process for nurses and administrative positions is at an advanced stage.

Dr Laura Durcan, vice-president of the Irish Hospital Consultants Association, said they cannot attract the calibre of doctors they need on the wages offered in Ireland.

"We train more doctors than anywhere else in Europe and these excellent clinicians go abroad and we haven't been able to get them back," she told RTÉ’s Today with Sean O’Rourke.

They're in Australia, they're in Canada and they're unwilling and unable to come home and work in a job where they earn 50% less than their colleagues to do exactly the same job.
